Your newly diagnosed T1D child has had it with the injections. Honestly so have you! Your current reality is that they are hungry for snack and one more injection has a high likelihood of landing you both crying under the table. Free food – preventing &/or stopping tears in T1 homes across America! (Always ask their doctor but “free food” was heaven sent at our house!)
Favorite “no dose” foods (for Type 1 Diabetics) are: dill pickles, jerky, olives, lunchmeat, cheese sticks, sugar free Jell-O cups, pork rinds, a serving of nuts & those 2-3 carb yogurts! In summer, make popsicles with sugar free drink mix. Making something that feels special is pretty simple but very helpful! Keep a list of favorite brands, flavors, which store “always” has these items in stock.
It’s also helpful to put one or two of those drink flavor packs in your purse for when you can find nothing sugar free that they will drink. Buy a water, mix in yummy drink flavor & return to smiles! Type One Diabetic kids can quickly wind up feeling like everything is a “NO!” Thinking of what you can say “yes” to & having it available is a big boost to morale – theirs & yours!
If you harbor some well founded concerns about the free snack fully working out, add some movement. Batting a balloon back & forth for 5-10 minutes helps relieve tension & uses up carbs for energy! Everyone wins! Your Type One needs activity of course, but laughing together and feeling like you’re in this as a team is also incredibly unifying!
